Whatever length of time your loved one stays in the hospital, long or short, visit as often as you can, every day if possible- even if you only go for 15 minutes.
Whenever Dad was in the hospital, my own disappointment often set in: I can’t believe I have to go to the hospital again, I have so many other things I have to do…or This is exhausting. However, I was not the sick person suffering, my parent was. He was the one being poked and prodded and staying in the hospital.
As their child and caregiver, we need to stay present and mindful of our thoughts so we may be a positive force for mom or dad. Remind yourself you can still enjoy your own life while finding the little joys available as shared moments that come up unexpectedly. This is yet another time to serve. It’s not easy for them, but parents often put on a brave face for their children.
So Visit, Visit, Visit… And tell them how much you love them daily.
Be well, you Got this!
